How to write your vows

Vows can feel daunting. How do you put all your love into words? I’ve included some vow-writing tips below.

Tip #1 - Start early

Did you catch yourself thinking “I love him/her so much”? Write it down.

Did your partner make you laugh? Write it down.

Did you think “I’m so lucky to have him/her”? Write it down.

Use your thoughts across the months to capture exactly what you think about your partner. Write down stories where your partner make you laugh uncontrollably. Write about that time they held you when you were hurting. Write about how you celebrated together when you got that promotion or the time you shared a whole tub of ice cream watching tv. These stories are what makes your relationship truly special and they give concrete and meaningful examples of why you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner.

Tip #2 - Decide on your vow length and tone together

Your vows are your chance to address your partner and tell them what you promise to give them in marriage. Talk about the tone of your vows with you partner - are you both going to be serious or add in some jokes? Talk about the length of your vows with your partner - will they be short and sweet or will you write something longer and share a story? Vows that are similar in tone and length present perfectly on the day.

Tip #3 - Don’t overthink it

Sit down and just write. It doesn’t have to be or bad - it just needs to prompt you to reflect on your relationship and love for your partner. In writing things down, you will find yourself remembering special moments and the way your partners makes you feel. It you sit down with pen to paper for long enough, I promise you will dig up some beautiful gems from your past and find the words to express your love.
